Advanced Massage and Manual Therapy Workshops

Myofascial Release and Mobilization – MFRM

Myofascial release is a unique, whole body approach, which focuses on the entire connective tissue (fascial) system to successfully treat long standing chronic pain, postural problems and movement restriction/discomfort that resist other conventional treatments. This very non-invasive and highly effective approach to manual and massage therapy is based upon the work of John Barnes, PT who made an amazing contribution to the growth and development of the Healing Arts by making his knowledge and skills accessible to countless therapists throughout the world. Jocelyn Has trained with John Barnes PT., as well as his highly creative and gifted protégé, Claudia Scrivener, PT. Jocelyn will present fundamental anatomy and physiology, assessment and treatment principles and wide variety of applications for different areas and many of the most common chronic musculoskeletal dysfunctions. She guarantees a direct and individual hands-on experience in this course to assure that each student will be able to work with the client’s fascia, like a sculptor, to find and release the specific areas that are the causes of these problems, allowing the body to restore itself to a healthy state. Myofascial Release compliments all other massage and manual therapy techniques for optimal results!

1. Myofascial Essentials –

This 4 hour Introduction to the Principles, Basic Technique and Assessment of Myofascial Release and Mobilization will present the participant with a clear and practical overview of the Myofascial System PLUS let you bring home basic skills to begin incorporating this powerful technique into your existing practice.

2. Level 1 Myofascial Release and Mobilization –

This 2 Day, 14 hour Training covers the fundamental anatomy and physiology of the fascial system; visual and tactile assessment skills; all of the essential Direct treatment techniques for the superficial and intermediate layers of fascia; a wide variety of applications for different areas of the body and many common chronic musculoskeletal dysfunctions.

3. Level 2 Myofascial Release and Mobilization –

This 2 Day 14 hour Training is a continuation and further exploration of the Fasical System. Jocelyn will introduce more subtle and complete forms of assessments skills; incorporate Indirect Techniques of Treatment and introduce the Deeper layers of the fascial system, including the body’s horizontal diaphragms, visceral and cranial membranes. Participants will also explore 2-Therapist Techniques for maximum effectiveness.

*Pre-requisite – Level 1 Myofascial Release and Mobilization.

Passive Myo-Rhythmic Release – PMRR

Jocelyn’s innovative approach to soft tissue treatment was greatly inspired by her 40 year career as a dancer and dance instructor. It combines elements of Trager, Rhythmical Mobilization, Korean Relaxation, Passive Range of Motion, Trigger Point Therapy and Soft Tissue Approximation (S/CS). Unlike traditional deep tissue release therapy, the hypertoned area of tissue is mobilized and sculpted around the therapist’s stationary or slowly moving resistance. This enables a profound release of muscle hypertonicity and adhesions without creating tissue damage or further adhesions, while it virtually eliminates pain and discomfort to the client. A joy for both therapist and client, this technique also teaches the client to associate release of pain and tension with healthy and natural movement patterns.

1. PMRR Workshop Level 1 –

This 6 hour, full-day workshop will introduce the participant to the basic skills of rhythmical mobilization and passive range of motion as used for both assessment and treatment; introduce the anatomy and physiology of the joint receptors and their impact in the release of muscle tension; present and practice the art of myorhythmic mobilization in both the upper and lower extremity; incorporate and apply all of the above with PMRR of the upper and lower extremity and scapular region.

2. PMRR Workshop Level 2 –

This 12 hour, 2 Day workshop continues and elaborates upon the principles presented in Level 1. This course will focus on specific muscle groups; introduce a wide range of position and movement variations to access and release chronically hypetoned and adhered regions of the body; apply PMRR to the posterior, lateral and anterior aspects of the cervical spine, Anterior Thorax, Lumbar and Abdominal regions; refine the art of encouraging the client to release protection muscle guarding and holding patterns through verbal and manual cues; teach the participant auto-biomechanical skills to maximize the effectiveness of applications and minimize both energy output and physical strain; teach self-mobilization techniques and the instruction of these techniques to clients for continuing home care.

* Pre-requisite : PMRR Level 1

Muscle Energy Technique (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation)

Muscle Energy Technique is a gentle, non-invasive form of Neuromuscular Therapy that restores normal function to joints, which have been compromised due to shortening and spasm of the surrounding musculature. Assessment includes range of motion testing and palpation. Application of technique includes active isometric and isotonic contractions applied by the client as per the specific direction of and resistance by the practitioner. Results are immediate are verifiable through reassessment.

1. Level 1 Muscle Energy Technique for the Lumbar and Thoracic Spine –

This 2 day – 14 hour workshop covers the essential anatomy, land-marking and joint mechanics of the Vertebral Column; introduces the theory of Muscle Energy Technique; outlines indications for and contraindications to MET; reviews the relationship between the peripheral and autonomic nervous system relative to vertebral lesions; provides a systematic step-by-step protocol for assessment, and correction of Type 1 and Type 2 Rotoscoliosis lesions of the Lumbar and Thoracic Spine; develops and refines the palpations skills of the participant; teaches easy notation and record keeping of assessments and results.

2. Level 2 Muscle Energy Technique for the Cervical Spine and Sacrum –

This 2 day – 14 hour workshop is a continuation of Level 1 which focuses on the cervical spine, including the Atlanto-axial and Atlanto-occipital joints, as well as the sacrum; summarizes indications for and contraindications to these regions; reviews the peripheral, cranial, autonomic nervous system relation to cervical and sacral dysfunctions; presents a variety of assessment and correction techniques for the above; outlines the recommended protocol for both assessment and treatment of the above; discusses the incorporation of muscle energy technique into a integrative therapy treatment plan.

*Pre-requisite : Level 1 Muscle Energy Technique

3. Level 3 Muscle Energy Technique for the Ribs –

This 2 day -14 hour workshop offers the practitioner an effective and invaluable tool to assess and treat both functional and structural lesions of the ribs; reviews the anatomy of the Thoracic spine and presents the anatomy of the rib cage and thoraco-vertebral joints; reviews the autonomic nervous system relative to thoracic joint and rib dysfunction; presents indication and contra-indications of MET for the ribs; simplifies palpation skills of the ribs; covers assessment and treatment of functional lesions; covers assessment and treatment of structural lesions; outlines the recommended MET protocol for the entire Thoracic region.

*Re-requisite : Muscle Energy for the Thoracic Spine

Computer Syndrome “Assessment to Treatment to Resolution – an Integrative Approach”

Computer Syndrome is today’s fastest growing and most prevalent dysfunction and accounts for an average of up to 80% of clinic visits. As in all syndromes, we encounter a variety of symptoms and presentations in our clients, many of which are categorized as pathologies and dysfunctions and some of which are even categorized as syndromes themselves. In the case of “Computer Syndrome”, these are the direct result of long term and chronic postural imbalance combined with repetitive strain in multiple areas. If we focus on treatment of these individual areas and their symptoms, we will more than likely find ourselves caught in a revolving door of temporary and localized relief and improvement in specific areas, while other areas present increasing symptoms. However, if these multiple areas are considered, assessed and treated as one Syndrome, with one area precipitating, affecting or being caused by another, the possibilities of successful resolution are much higher. Due to the fact that we are dealing with multiple areas, as well as a variety of tissues and areas of the body involved, it is highly effective to adopt an Integrative Therapy approach to Treatment and Management – using the most appropriate techniques for specific areas and tissues that gives us the maximum results.

This 2 day -14 hour workshop reviews and integrates both assessment and treatment skills from the Myofascial Release and Mobilization, Paradoxical Myorhythmic Release and Muscle Energy Technique and infuses them with a specific in-clinic and at-home Remedial Exercise System to offer a Resolution for this rapidly growing and troublesome Syndrome.

*Pre-requisites: Myofasical Release (Level 1), PMRR (Level 1) and MET (Level 1)
